Hunter Valley Private Hospital has a long history in the provision of rehabilitative care.
Our rehabilitation services are undertaken with a team-based holistic approach including rehabilitation specialists, resident medical officers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, social workers, psychologists, diversional therapists and nursing staff.
All our patients receive tailored care plans from admission which includes planning their outcome goals up to their date of discharge and beyond.
Through the Functional Impairment Measure (FIM), a set of 18 different scores of function, we assess a person’s ability to deal with day to day activities, improvements to the FIM are used to determine a patient’s progress.
Our rehabilitation unit includes:
- Gymnasium
- Hydrotherapy pool
- Outdoor exercise area
- Independent living unit.
Hunter Valley Private Hospital offers the following outpatient services to members of the community:
- Aquatic therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Speech pathology
- Social work.
Patients can attend for one therapy or in combination via a day rehabilitation program.

Hunter Valley Private Hospital offers a Day Only Rehabilitation Program to those who have Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) health care entitlement and persons with appropriate health insurance, workers compensation or third party insurance authorisations.
The aim of Hunter Valley Private Hospital’s Day Only Rehabilitation Program is:
- to provide professional allied health treatment to community dwellers
- to provide continuity of care following an inpatient stay
- to educate and assist in the prevention of illness
- to enhance the health and well-being of patients.
All patients must meet the admission criteria before being accepted into the same day rehabilitation program. For admission the patient must:
- have a musculoskeletal, orthopaedic or neurological disorder
- be cognitively able to participate in the prescribed rehabilitation program
- be medically stable.
The outpatient program is designed for patients who are medically stable and live at home, but require several rehabilitation therapies.
The therapies may be any combination of nursing, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work.
Patients that attend the Day Rehabilitation Program mostly attend two days a week for a period of six to eight weeks, however this can be adjusted according to the patients needs.
We run morning and afternoon sessions.
Patients need to be referred to one of our Rehabilitation Physicians or our Geriatrician.
Hunter Valley Private Hospital offers day program services utilizing the following disciplines:

- Amputee Program
- Back Care Program.

Hunter Valley Private Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit has an independent living suite which is designed to provide patients with the support and confidence required to make a successful transition from the hospital back into home.
The suite includes a kitchenette where meals can be prepared and cooking assessments are carried out.
The facility is an important phase in our holistic approach to rehabilitation and is offered to those patients and carers who may be unsure of their ability to safely manage all care needs after discharge.
A fully equipped gymnasium and hydrotherapy pool are available on-site for strength, conditioning and retraining programs.
The unit also has a range of assessment and counselling rooms where patients can meet with doctors and therapists in quiet, private surroundings.
